The best time to get to know Matulji is in carnival season, and it is right here that carnival has the longest tradition. This place above Opatija provides an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into the tradition of the zvončari – bell ringers and their day-long pageant along time-honoured routes. The bell ringing groups of the area have received international recognition with their inclusion on the UNESCO list of intangible world heritage. However, Matulji is increasingly becoming a popular destination in other seasons too, especially for guests who appreciate rural tourism and excellent homemade food, as there are eating establishments here that have been open for more than a hundred years, handing down recipes from generation to generation. Nature lovers will particularly appreciate time spent in Lisina Forest Park, and also the opportunity to try out the cycling and hiking trails that pass through the centuries-old forests. If you visit the Matulji area, make sure you try Jarbola, a wine obtained from a local grape variety.
